A key responsibility of a leader in any team is look out for the well-being of their team members. While we all need good stress to drive performance, too much stress does lead to burnout. Some lessons I have learned through my own experience with burnout from both the leader and team member point of view are:
1) Set Boundaries
It's ok to say NO when your workload is already full. When you are outside work hrs disconnect completely- turn off notifications on your device, don't take a work call, etc. Also don't be thinking about work in your personal time, even though you are not physically at work, you are cognitively engaging in work if you are thinking about it.
2) Get Clear on Priorities
Have a check in regularly with your leader on priorities, always focus on the most important items which have an impact. Regular check in's on priorities opens up the opportunity to discuss challenges and talk about solutions. It also allows for re-setting priorities and being clear on expectations.
3) Look after your Health
Take regular breaks throughout the working day. Get away from screens, go for a walk, meditate for a few mins. Avoid eating lunch at your desk- block out time in your calendar for lunch. Connect with others socially.
4) Do things that give you Energy
Ensuring that you are putting things on your calendar which give you enjoyment and energy will ensure you are recharging your battery. This will help give you the energy to do those tasks that drain your energy.
5) Ask for Help
Asking for help no matter what level you are at in an organization is a sign of strength and not weakness. You would be amazed at the level of support available within your team once you find the courage to ask for help.
